Nebraska to Host Some of Comedy’s Biggest Names

LINCOLN, Neb. (November 7, 2013)—This fall snow won’t be the only thing filling the air. You will also be hearing a lot of laughter. Nebraska’s many entertainment venues have created the perfect comedy storm this fall with performances from some of the best in the world of comedy making appearances throughout the state.

This first and probably most famous comedian on the list is a performance by Nebraska’s own Larry the Gable Guy on November 15 at the Orpheum Theater in Omaha. Larry the Cable Guy is a multi-platinum recording artist, Grammy® nominee and one of the top comedians in the country. Born in Pawnee City, Nebraska, Larry the Cable Guy’s humorous observations and celebration of the workingman keep fans coming back. Dressed in his trademark sleeveless flannel shirt, jeans and camouflage baseball cap, Larry jokes about everything from the Dollar Store to global warming. Many people know Larry best for being part of the highly successful concert Blue Collar Comedy Tour. If you haven’t already seen Larry… Git-R-Done!

Also on November 15, the Lied Center for Performing Arts will be presenting Jim Belushi & The Chicago Comedy Board. An alumnus of Saturday Night Live and Chicago’s famed Second City, Jim Belushi brings to the stage an improvised comedy sketch show featuring Chicago Board of Comedy members Larry Joe Campbell, Jon Barinholtz and Brad Morris. This should be a hilarious evening of improv with a comedy legend.

November 22, Emmy & Grammy-nominated comedian and actress, Margaret Cho is set to perform at The Rococo Theatre in Lincoln. She will be featuring her new stand-up comedy show called MOTHER. MOTHER is a complicated and completely original take on sex, politics, drugs, guns, identity and madness, proving time and time again that boundaries uncrossed are meaningless. The cornerstone of MOTHER revolves around Cho’s long-suffering Korean mom.

For an equally funny show in a more casual venue, visit Omaha’s Funny Bone Comedy Club on November 22 or 23rd to catch Kevin Nealon. Nealon is best known for his nine-year stint as a cast member of NBC's Saturday Night Live, and has received critical acclaim for his role in the Showtime series, Weeds. On the big screen, Kevin starred alongside Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston in 2011 hit Just Go with It.

The comedy will continue to roll on after Thanksgiving. On December 6, Drew Carey, stand-up comic turned actor and producer will be performing at the Rococo Theater in Lincoln. Carey had the distinction of having two hit shows simultaneously: "The Drew Carey Show," and the improv/sketch show "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" on which he was host and a producer. The success of that show led to the creation of "Drew Carey's Improv All-Stars," an improv troupe that performs in showrooms across the country.

Norfolk Nebraska has a dog in this hunt too, with a December 14 performance of the Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood Comedy Show at the DeVent Center. Made famous by Whose Line Is It Anyway?, this “Two Man Group”, uses their razor sharp wit and amazing improv skills, taking contributions for the audience to create hilarious and original scenes. Be prepared because this show becomes truly interactive as audience members are called to the stage to participate.

Nebraska Tourism Commission Director Kathy McKillip commented, “Nebraska is really becoming a great place for comedy, which seems like a natural fit considering some of the best comedians of our time have come from Nebraska, including Johnny Carson and Larry the Cable Guy. We hope that Nebraskan’s and visitors to the state will make plans to see some or all of these great shows."

25 Journalists and Travel Writers to Tour Southeast Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (September 23, 2013)—Southeast Nebraska will step into the national spotlight next week as the state plays host to a group of 25 journalists writing for national and regional media outlets. This will be the fourth media tour sponsored by the Nebraska Tourism Commission within the past year. The tours are coordinated by Swanson Russell in cooperation with Geiger & Associates, a national media tour developer, and designed to expose specifically targeted media outlets to Nebraska's offerings for visitors in various regions of the state.

The visiting journalists write for publications including Midwest Living, Better Homes & Gardens, Smart Meetings, American Profile, Pathfinders, Parents, Family Fun, Colorado Parent, Witchita Family, Explore, Adventure Cyclist, Slice, AAA Midwest Traveler, AAA Home & Away, Subaru Drive, Colorado Expression, Rider, American Heritage, Toronto Sun, Nashville Tennessean, San Antonio Express News, Dallas Morning News and more. The September media tour will include activities in Lincoln, Nebraska City, Brownville, Beatrice, Pawnee City and other stops in the southeastern part of the state.

The three previous media tours have already produced some significant media coverage for the state as a travel destination. Some 77 journalists have visited Nebraska on the three previous media tours, already resulting in 119 articles or broadcast segments which have appeared in media outlets including Midwest Living, Saveur, American Cowboy, Cowboys & Indians, Huffington Post, Group Tour, Canadian World Traveler, Trailer Life, National Public Radio, Orlando Sentinel, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Oklahoman, Fort Worth Star Telegram, Toronto Sun, Albuquerque Journal and the Coloradoan.

Some 69,972,430 potential visitors have been exposed to this coverage. If this editorial coverage had been purchased as paid advertising it would have cost $1,645,632. National and in-state tourism sponsors have provided $160,630.00 in goods and services including air transportation, lodging, meals and activities to support the Nebraska Tourism Commission’s media tour program.

"Media tours give Nebraska's tourism industry an opportunity to get their message out to key writers and all of their readers. Travel writers need to experience the destination in order to write about it, and these tours allow many segments of the tourism industry to expose their offerings to these journalists. Earned media has a high degree of credibility with consumers, and the coverage has been extremely positive about Nebraska as a destination,” said Kathy McKillip, Director of the Nebraska Tourism Commission.
