About This Destination

North Platte's tradition of hospitality began with one of our founding fathers, Col. Wm. F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody. He loved to entertain and show his guests everything that was great about the place he called home. That tradition continued through the era of the North Platte Canteen, where we hosted more than six million service men and women for the duration of World War II. As the home of Union Pacific Railroad's Bailey Yard, the world's largest railroad yard, we are proud of our railroad heritage. Located in the heart of the Platte River Valley, America's "Great Platte River Road", our transportation history is strong. From the fur trappers, traders, railroad, westward trails, Lincoln Highway and Interstate 80, all the major westward movements came through North Platte. Come see our great attractions, natural beauty and exciting adventures.
