The Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center is a part of and located on the campus of Chadron State College. The Center interprets the life and literature of author Mari Sandoz, as well as the history and culture of the High Plains region. Sandoz wrote 22 books during her lifetime, most notably "Old Jules" and "Crazy Horse." The Center also preserves and interprets the history of the cattle ranching industry through the C.F. Coffee Gallery. The Gallery tells of the story of cattle and cattle ranching from arrival in the New World to present day. The Center is also surrounded by Heritage Gardens which display the botanical history and culture of the region. The Center is free and open year round.
