Explore North Platte, Nebraska

North Platte is home to some of Nebraska's most interesting stories and famous figures. It's also a spot you should visit today! Here are a few places you should start.

History & Culture

North Platte has a fascinating and varied history to dive into. It's home to the world's largest railroad classification yard – sorting and connecting more than 10,000 rail cars per day - which you can view from atop the Golden Spike Tower and Visitor Center. Learn about the life of famed showman William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody at Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park. Cody’s restored mansion and barn are packed with memorabilia to explore. Head to the Lincoln County Historical Museum

to learn about the North Platte Canteen, a World War II effort that served 6 million service members during their 15-minute train stops while traveling across the country, as well as visit the historical village.

The Historic Canteen District, North Platte’s downtown Certified Creative District, is named in honor of the town’s hospitable community spirit. It features charming brick streets, glowing lights and an array of locally owned restaurants, shops and art galleries, including the Prairie Arts Center, which has repurposed the historic 1913 Post Office Building for art classes, galleries and event space.

Plan a visit to North Platte in June to celebrate the state at NEBRASKAland DAYS. A PRCA rodeo, back-to-back nights of concerts, parade and so much more headline this summer event.

Get Outside

A popular destination for exploring the area’s outdoor wonders is Dusty Trails, where you can choose your own adventure! Horseback riding, floating on the North Platte River (tanking, tubing, canoeing or kayaking), bird viewing for sandhill cranes and prairie chickens are all memorable experiences. Be sure to stop by the petting zoo, too. If you want to get your blood pumping, head to Potters Pasture, which has more than 1,200 acres of hills, canyons and groves to explore via maintained mountain biking trails. Head just down the road to Lake Maloney State Recreation Area or Sutherland Reservoir State Recreation Area to hit the water for boating, fishing and camping.
