“If you'd like to avoid I-80 I'd recommend hwy 2 to Thedford then cut north on 83 from there towards Valentine, then take 20 the rest of the way west through Chadron…You'll pass by the Nebraska National Forest at Halsey and a couple of beautiful wildlife refuges and wetlands up in the Sandhills.”
Avoiding I-80 takes you to the parts of the state that only the locals see. Discover beautiful scenes in quiet areas and upgrade your road trip to the way it's supposed to be.

“If it doesn't disrupt your route too much, get off I-80. Top nature spots unique to Nebraska I would say are Toadstool Geologic park and the Ashfall Fossil Beds.”
Toadstool is an iconic geological feature of Nebraska. This park, maintained by the National Forest Service, contains rock formations and campsites to experience the badlands right here in Nebraska.
On the other end of the state, the Ashfall Fossil Beds are a unique experience themselves. See a moment frozen in time and experience paleontology in Nebraska.
