About Southwest Nebraska

Head west: It’s what the pioneers did and you can too, for frontier lore, railroad history and wide-open spaces.

TRAVELING THROUGH NEBRASKA, WE LIKE TO STAY OFF OF THE MAIN ROADS. THAT LED US TO RED WILLOW STATE RECREATION AREA, WHICH WAS INCREDIBLE.

What To Do

Hit the water at Red Willow Reservoir State Recreation Area in McCook. Get a taste of the Old West (and maybe some souvenirs) at Nebraska’s largest Western gift store, Fort Cody Trading Post in North Platte. Experience panoramic views of the world’s largest railroad classification yard from the city’s Golden Spike Tower, then explore Cody Park nearby. The park’s Wild West Memorial pays homage to Buffalo Bill. For more cowboy history, visit Boot Hill in Ogallala.

Where to Stay

Take advantage of access to public hunting grounds and a peaceful overnight stay at Lakeview Lodge in Stratton. For something different, rent an RV from Lake Mac RV Rentals in Lemoyne—there’s no better way to maximize your time on the soft-sand beaches and clear waters of Lake McConaughy, a defining feature of southwest Nebraska. Pioneer history and prairie views are Nebraska signatures, too: Stay in a 1906 prairie-style home at Rocking Horse Inn in Grant for your immersion.

Where to Eat

At Ole’s Big Game Steakhouse & Lounge, a Paxton tradition, enjoy hearty fare surrounded by impressive taxidermy. Sample newer favorites— including rich espresso and toasty panini—at Hillside Perk in Culberston, or go for old-school Italian fare at Citta’ Deli in McCook. The city is also home to Coppermill Steakhouse, a longtime favorite serving aged, hand-cut steaks. In Madrid, line up with the locals for fresh-baked cinnamon rolls at Madrid General Store.

Where to Drink

Enjoy local craft beer and friendly vibes at Pals Brewing Company in North Platte. Bonus points if you stop in on Sunday, when the brewery reveals new small-batch releases. In Moorefield, there’s a unique brew: Make an appointment to visit Lazy RW Distillery and sip straight and flavored whiskeys that start with Nebraska corn and family recipes. If you need a cold one in the simplest sense of the term, grab a stool at Sutherland’s local watering hole, Longhorn Bar.
