FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LINCOLN, Neb. (May 5, 2016)— Rounding out an exciting Travel and Tourism Week, the Nebraska Tourism Commission is partnering with the Gering Convention and Visitors Bureau for the first ever Nebraska Tourism Cares project, this Friday and Saturday, May 6-7.
“Nebraska Tourism Cares is the truest from of Nebraska Nice. We are excited to see the impact that this program will have on the communities and the entire industry,” said Nebraska Tourism Commission executive director, Kathy McKillip.
This weekend, volunteers will help restore the historic Fort Robidoux Trading Post in Gering, Neb., by removing the chinking (material between wooden frames) and replace it with longer-lasting, historically sound material.
“These service projects are exciting because they show off the best of Nebraska—great people working to preserve destinations that enrich the story of the state,” said Nebraska Tourism Cares coordinator, Amanda Barker. “With the fort sitting in the shadow of Scotts Bluff National Monument, this is the perfect project for kicking off the Nebraska Tourism Cares program to begin a tradition of service and philanthropy in the tourism industry.”
The Nebraska Tourism Cares restoration project at the Robidoux Trading Post will take place Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., eight miles west of Gering on Carter Canyon Road. Volunteer information is as follows:
- Refreshments and lunch will be provided for both days
- Wear comfortable clothes and shoes
- Bring sunscreen
- Bring a pair of work gloves
- All hand tools and materials will be provided
- Kevin Haberman from Scotts Bluff National Monument will be the restoration expert in charge; he will be training volunteers on how to do the chinking work
- There are NO BATHROOM facilities at the Post; however it’s only a few miles drive back to Sandberg Implement on Highway 71 who will graciously allow volunteers us to use their restroom facilities
If you have questions or would like to pitch in as a last minute volunteer you can contact Karla Niedan Streeks at (308)631-2313 or Amanda Barker at (402)326-4896.
The second Nebraska Tourism Cares site in 2016 will be in Chadron, Neb., June 10 & 11, where volunteers will clear old railroad ties, clear brush, and do various other tasks along the Cowboy Trail in order prepare the trail the first five miles east of Chadron for further development.
