The Revenant movie costumes donated to Nebraska museum

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LINCOLN, Neb. (February 19, 2016)— With 12 Oscar nominations, more than any other movie in 2016, The Revenant,(view the movie trailer here) starring Leonardo DiCaprio, could be considered the biggest motion picture of the year and a Nebraska man is proud to say his name is listed in the credits.

The movie depicts the story of mountain man, Hugh Glass, whom according to legend, survived a bear attack, even after being left for dead by his confidants.

Dr. James Hanson, the historian at the Museum of the Fur Trade in Chadron, Nebraska assisted with some of the “behind the scenes” details, making the movie more realistic. “It had been written by two people who were not historians so I had advised them on language, on trapping, on building fires,” he explained. Hanson, who has spent his whole life studying the fur trade, has written multiple books on the business, and his abundance of knowledge was useful when he spent a week on the movie set in Calgary, Canada. When Hanson returned to the states the work didn't stop. “I got calls from New York hairdressers who were designing the Indian face paint and hair,” he said. That kind of input is only one example of how useful he was to director, Alejandro González Iñárritu.

To show their gratitude for Hanson’s help with the movie, the film company has donated several items to the Museum of the Fur Trade. “The company’s been very nice, very generous," said Hanson. "They sent a small collection of costumes from the movie and they’ll be sending more later including original sketches.” The four full costumes will be on display when the seasonal museum re-opens in May.

“We’re so glad Dr. Hanson was able to share his knowledge with the movie makers- that’s Nebraska Nice,” said Nebraska Tourism Executive Director, Kathy McKillip, who encourages everyone to visit Chadron. "The Museum of the Fur Trade is a world-class museum right here in Nebraska. The exhibits there are phenomenal and unique to the state's history. It's a must see.”

Dawes County Tourism Director, Kristina Harter hopes the success of the movie will help in promoting the 40th annual Fur Trade Days, taking place this summer on July 7-10. “We are well underway for planning the event already, and look forward to featuring The Revenant in our plans. The combination of the release of the film and the milestone year of Fur Trade Days is sure to make for an excellent event,” said Harter.

The annual Academy Awards will air on ABC, February 28, at 7:30 CST and you can bet that Hanson will be tuning in, rooting for the movie about the industry he's spent a lifetime studying. “It’s a wonderful story and it’s iconic among mountain men of how brave and tough and courageous they were.”

When you see the movie, keep watching all the way through the credits. Hanson humbly shared that his name is towards the end.
