Part of Nebraska’s sweeping Sandhills, this region’s landscape and ecological diversity make for a memorable nature-filled getaway. Spot wildlife among the rolling meadows of Valentine National Wildlife Refuge, or slow down to take in view of rivers, valleys grasslands and woodlands while biking the Cowboy Trail. Water activities are a favorite pastime in the area. Local outfitters can help you tube, kayak or canoe down the Niobrara River, a national scenic river. The spring-fed, slow-moving water carries you past outstanding natural beauty, including the tallest waterfall in Nebraska, Smith Falls. Located in Smith Falls State Park, this is also a popular destination for campers and hikers. For more outdoor adventure, head to Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area, where 3,000 acres of clear water are open year-round for boating, fishing and water sports.

The annual Nebraska Star Party at Merritt Reservoir draws night sky enthusiasts and newcomers alike. Far from city lights, it makes the perfect place to experience brilliant, star-filled skies. Guests are encouraged to join the stargazing fun whether they bring a telescope or not.

Discover History and Culture

Step into Nebraska’s ranching past at Bowring Ranch State Historical Park in nearby Merriman. The Eve Bowring Visitor Center highlights the region’s history with exhibits on ranching, homesteading, geology, wildlife and other topics related to the Sandhills and the legacy of the Bowring family.

Eat & Drink Local

When you’re ready to eat, head to The Prairie Club Lodge (also a world-renowned golf course) for a taste of “cow country” cuisine. For a more laid-back meal, stop by the Old Mill for fresh pizza, sandwiches and baked goods that make the perfect dessert.

After savoring local beef, head to Bolo Beer Co. to quench your thirst with a Happy Juice IPA or try other favorites such as the Waggle Scottish Ale or Perky Blonde. Just outside Valentine, explore  Niobrara Valley Vineyards, where you can tour the vines and enjoy pours of their award-winning Marquette and semi-dry white wine, Boss Cow.

In Wild West country, stop by Young’s Western Wear to pick up your best cowboy attire. The third-generation, family-owned business offers quality Western clothing and gear. For styles heard toward women and kids, head up the road to Broken Spoke Boutique. With handmade jewelry, skincare, chocolates and even vinyl records, it’s a spot with something for everyone.
